The Fulham Under-21 squad is currently an age category used by the club to participate in the EFL Trophy. It was previously used as Fulham's second string side from 2012 until 2016 in the U21 Premier League and cup competition, until this was changed to an U23 squad prior to the start of 2016-17.
The U21 squad was created in 2012 upon new structures put in place by the FA, with the aim of achieving a larger percentage of young players getting more game time, and to improve the quality of football that is played in reserve team football. It was effectively a continuation of the Development squad, with the only changes being that the U21 squad may only name 3 players over the age of 21 in their matchday squad.
